What To Charge For A Box Stuffer

Posted by zact on 250 Points
We are opening up our channels to outside marketing and I am pricing a box stuffer and box sticker:

Box stuffer will drop into outgoing shipments at .xx per unit plus cost of print (or customer can print themselves and deliver to us to drop in)

Box sticker will be placed on the top of the box or prominently elsewhere.

What is a good starting point per box insert?

Ultimately, what's the stuffer/sticker worth to your customer? What measurable value do they receive from their addition?

It's not what they think it's worth, it's what the market has determined what that value is. All I have learned is that it is "inexpensive" but I have no idea what that means. Is it .01 per insert, is it .25 per insert? Inexpensive is in the eye of the buyer.
Does anyone out there currently charge for inserts or has paid for one?

I must disagree with you. It IS what your market thinks it's worth. It's partly a function of who your target audience is and how well it overlaps with their target audience. It also is probably a function of the specific product(s) each of you sells, the redemption rate, price points, etc.

Ask yourself what the lowest price you would accept is, and start with that. If someone pays it, then you can ask more for the next one. Another approach is to charge for conversions only -- say 5% of each sale they make based on the insertion. Or some combination: $0.25 per insertion plus 5% of each sale, for example.

Since neither you nor the customer really knows what to expect, you should probably enter a test phase. Then you can have an informed discussion regarding a fair price. At least then you will have some experience. Good for both of you. And demonstrates trust/openness.

In most circumstances I would agree with you - but in this instance the market has determined that this channel is "inexpensive" so if we decide that $1.00 is what our value is, but the rest of the market has said, "no, this is worth .25 we have priced ourselves out.
What I'm looking for is someones real world experience on what they have charged or paid for this type of advertising.
