Community Hub And Safe Home For Young Mothers.

Posted by sparrowsnestcalgary on 125 Points
Hello!

I am looking to create a strong tag line for a non profit endeavour that I am currently spearheading.

The Sparrow's Nest Calgary (or The Nest YYC - still undecided)

Mission: Through shelter, community and compassion, we elevate young female led households towards their full potential.

Vision: Every child (family?? mother??) thriving in a safe and productive home.

Goal: To create a robust community of support and a safe communal home that contributes to successful life outcomes for pregnant and parenting women aged 16-26 years who are overcoming adversity and without support systems. Giving young single mothers the assistance needed to get ahead. A hand up, not a hand out.

Home (The Nest) will serve 6-8 women (plus their children 0-3yrs) at a time for a period of up to 2 years. Shared accommodation opportunity in a safe and family-centered environment that provides continuous support and mentorship in parenting and other life skills.

Objectives:

To provide shared housing and other necessities of life to single mothers and their children who are without external supports, are of low income and/or in need.

To strengthen the mother-child relationship and promote the healthy development of each child within our care.

To break the cycle of inter generational poverty amongst single mothers (aged 16 thru 26 years) by empowering them to pursue further education and job-readiness/skills training.

To increase awareness of the unique challenges and stigmas that young single mothers face and the impact that these have on society at large.

This organization will serve young mothers who show ambition and drive to work towards a brighter future for themselves and children through community connections, education and/or employment skills training.

Residency is based on an application process with the anticipation that most clients will be referred via social partners (schools, youth serving agencies, etc.)

We are looking to create both a fun and outgoing - plus empowering and resilient - brand. A never give up and always work hard type of mentality.

Any insight and suggestions with regards to a suitable tag line to get us started on this would be greatly appreciated.

If most of the residents are likely to be referrals, then who is the tagline intended for? The social partners? Potential donors? Applicants? Community neighbors? Each of these groups would likely have slightly different messaging and therefore different taglines.

Now that you’ve made me think of the various stakeholders, I’m leaning more towards something that will catch the attention of the social supporters (volunteers and partners) as well as donors/funders.

Originally came up with ‘together we soar’ however think it may be vague and suited more towards the applicants.

    Thoughts?

It makes sense to focus on the donors/patrons.
What's the meaning of "Sparrow's Nest" for your name?
Since the name doesn't convey what you offer (it could be a clothing line, children's toys, etc.), the tagline needs to clarify the benefit of your organization. How unique is what you're offering in your region? How does it differ from other shared housing arrangements?

    Hello!

Neither the 'Sparrow's Nest' nor 'The Nest' are set in stone. The sparrow as a symbol however, has meaning. Community, perseverance, strength in numbers, self-worth and joy just to name a few. I'd like to include it if possible but do understand the importance of clarity.

As I tighten up the objectives of the organization, I am starting to realize that our end goal is to provide the tools (skills/resources/opportunities/mentorship) necessary for single mothers to succeed. For each individual, this will look different. There are three other housing providers in the city (1.5 million) with the capacity to house 20 women combined. Two of those providers focus more so on stabilization and immediate shelter whereas we wish to focus on nurturing the long term potential of both the woman and child. We will also eventually open up some services to non residents - think community hub - later down the road.

Community investment in young female led families so as to create a better tomorrow for all.

My suggestion is that you focus on the name first and then focus on the tagline. Otherwise, you'll be limiting yourself unnecessarily (for example, if the name changed to indicate shared housing, then the tagline could be very different).

The sparrow and/or nest are nice sounding, but may not be ideal for your intentions, nor convey the underlying meaning you hold dear.

    Agreed.

I can save 'The Nest' as reference for what we call the shared home.

Agency name.. I want to avoid being thought of as a group home and make it more of a foster slash surrogate family type of setting that builds (and welcomes in) community.

What do you think of using the name of a fictional mother and child to represent ownership?

For example - Sparrow and Tate's - A place/home for young moms in need.

Do you have a marketing/business plan yet for your business? If so, the research you did to create that document likely has the seeds of a great name in it based on interviews you've done with likely sponsors/donors. If not, then you're likely guessing based on your own feeling, rather than your target audience. The name/tagline you choose/create needs to resonate with THEM.
