I APOLOGIZE FOR CLOSING THIS TOO EARLY, SO I WILL POST IT AGAIN

I am sort of a loss on how to improve my SE ranking. I bought one of those do-it-yourself programs from my website hoster. It was totally worthless and did absolutely nothing (I consider it snake oil medicine). Short of hiring some expensive SEO consulting company, what can I do? My currrent ranking sucks.

    I agree with Kathleen. You need to identify the words/phrases people are using in searches. Wordtracker is excellent. You can use it on a trial basis for free at www.wordtracker.com, it is very easy to use and the tutorial is good.

    When you know what words/phrases you want to optimise the site for, then use Web Position Gold to analyse your page and suggest changes in Title, Meta Tags, Headings, and page content, etc..

    Incorporate the suggested changes and submit the site to the main search engines (Google, MSN and Yahoo). You then need to wait until the search engine crawlers/spiders visit your site and index the relevant pages. This can take anything from 48 hours to 3 to 6 weeks.
