Need Name Ideas For A T-shirt Company.

Posted by sassygirl15157 on 125 Points
I have been thinking for some time about opening a T-shirt company that sells only black t-shirts. Only black because myself and a few others I know have mentioned the struggle of finding shirts especially in the spring and summer in black. Plus I would like to be able to stand out some. I realize that black only may not appeal to all so I even thought of adding grey and white.
What I would print on them would vary between music lyrics, quotes, and motivational words/phrases. I would like to eventually be able to offer a small percentage of each shirt's sale to a non-profit to help the community (such as helping the homeless or foster children).
Originally I thought a name that reflects that it is a company that sells only black, but I also like the idea of a name that reflects determination, strength, or overcoming struggle. I do not want the word "T-shirts" in the name.
Any ideas? TIA

Not to be argumentative, but if you're only selling t-shirts, why wouldn't you want that fact to be in your name (so people can easily find what they are looking for)? For example, why not "Only Black T-Shirts" or "The Little Black T-Shirt Company"?

If you pick a more abstract name, you're going to need to do additional marketing to clearly (and quickly) tell people what you sell and why you're better than other companies selling similar products. The abstract name may also not resonate with the buyer - who's presumably simply looking for a black t-shirt that looks good on them.

I could be wrong, but I would think people buy t-shirts mostly because they express the buyer/wearer's strongly-held opinion or view, not because they need a new t-shirt or want to buy something that might contribute a small portion of the purchase price to support a worthwhile cause.

If I'm right, then you probably want to capture the "message" idea in the name. Maybe you should begin with a clear positioning statement for your business. Do you have one?

    Three Shades

Hire a graphics designer to do a logo in white, grey, and black. Should stand out.

Thank you all for responding. Sorry I haven't replied sooner I recently moved that that is a task in itself.
In response to the question of why not have the word "T-shirt" in the name... Mainly I decided against this in case I wanted to eventually offer more than just shirts.
So far out of the responses I like Three Shades, Carbon and Back in Black.
    Thank you all again!

It's great that you like 3 of the suggestions, and it would help us even more if you could share with us WHY you like those three. Is it simply a personal-preference thing, or do you have reason to believe they will appeal more to your target audience?

If it's just personal-preference, I would caution against picking something YOU like, without some strong positioning reason or information from your target audience. You are not the customer.

Think about what your customers might respond to and what you want their image of the company to be. Let's find a name that will communicate the right message.
