Logo & Tagline For Website Development Site

Posted by saratogahiker on 125 Points
I'm a website developer looking to start a side freelance business under the name "InfoGorp". The target audience would be small, rural businesses, including farms and homesteads. My main focus would be website development and UX/usability.

"InfoGorp" comes from "Information" and "Gorp" (trail-mix or, more generically, a yummy combination of things). A website is a combination of things; individually they may not mean much, but together they create something interesting.

I'm now at the point of creating the website, business cards, logo, etc. Any ideas for a logo and/or a tagline for "InfoGorp"?

Thank you!

Because "InfoGorp" doesn't tell people what you do or what benefit they might expect, you will need the tasgline to do double-duty. That's a real challenge for 3-5 words.

Would you consider starting over with the name-and-tagline as a unit, and develop those with an eye toward positioning your business in a stronger, more compelling way? Even if someone gets that Info = information, and Gorp = a yummy combination, it's still not clear what you do, who your target audience is, or why someone might hire you.

P.S. Before you start designing a website, you might want to draft a simple Creative Brief to clarify what you're trying to communicate and how you will measure success. Otherwise how will you know if you are on the right track?

My first thought was your name was a typo of InfoCorp. Rather than be clever, why not create a name that's more obvious? It'll save you time trying to explain what InfoGorp does and for who.

"it's still not clear what you do, who your target audience is, or why someone might hire you."
True, but that is the case for many business names. Certainly, there are good reasons to know exactly what a business does from just the name, but due to the small size of this business and its goals, I'm not overly concerned, but do want a tagline to accompany the company name that will help answer those questions.

" ... that is the case for many business names."

For larger businesses/companies, they can spend lots of money to give their brand names meaning.

For smaller businesses, it's all the more important that everything they do contribute to the positioning effort. They can't afford to simply spend their way to success. (This is probably one of the contributing factors to the high failure rate among new businesses.)

Good points, but I am currently committed to using the name "InfoGorp". I'm just one person doing some side business for local farms and homesteads in a very rural area. Most of my advertising will be via word-of-mouth, business cards, flyers. I'm not too concerned that the name describe what I do; the tagline would be visible, as well as a list of services I offer. Any suggestions on for the tagline and/or logo?
