Multiple Small Websites Or 1 Or 2 Big Websites?

Posted by michelea on 250 Points
We currently have two websites - a corporate website outlining who we are, what we do, the sectors we operate, our blog, news, events, etc. (www.gaelquality.com) Then we have a website (under construction) for our main product (software), which includes details about the features of the product, the services we offer around the product, such as support, configuration, etc.

We sell to two key, but different markets, which have their own jargon and their own uses for our software. These sectors are healthcare and aviation. There is a request from the aviation and healthcare sales teams to have their own websites, where they can group together information specific to their target sectors.

To get to to the point, what are your opinions and the pros and cons of having multiple websites. Should the sector content be part of one of our existing sites?

Since the target audiences are so different for each of your segments, you need to have different websites. There's no reason to confuse your healthcare customers with aviation stuff, and vice versa.

Whether they are literally on different websites (i.e., completely different domains) is almost irrelevant unless the only way people find you is via organic search. You can simply link your healthcare clients to www.gaelquality.com/healthcare and your aviation clients to www.gaelquality.com/aviation.

And just in case, you can have a homepage whose only purpose is to direct people who land there to the right place.
