How To Marketing Software For Small Business?

Posted by Anonymous on 250 Points
Greetings,

We've almost finished developing the first version of our software product. It targets to the small teams who have media archive and need the multiple user access to the media content (photo, video).

I plan to use our blog as one of the marketing tools.

What other low-budget ways can you suggest to our startup to bring the product to the market efficiently?

Thanks in advance for your advices!

I wrote about this in some details on my blog a few years back. Just took a look at it, and I think it is all still relevant:

    https://expandabroad.blogspot.com/2005/09/other-b2b-marketing-activities-to...

    https://expandabroad.blogspot.com/2005/09/b2b-activity-not-worth-doing.html

You may notice that I don''t have a blog listed in any of these as something to do. I am of mixed thoughts on blogs as an early activity to do. It is not proactively reaching prospects, but instead is put up in the hopes that someone would come and see it. Facebook business pages are the same. I instead would focus on active marketing that reaches out to prospects or to places where prospects may see it (such as press releases to targeted magazines)..

Facebook. Twitter. YouTube. LinkedIn, Article sites. SEO.
Direct response trade press ads. Local business groups.

Did you really develop software without any sense of how you'd market it? If so, that's completely backwards.

You should start by understanding the important customer need you're addressing, how you're going to let your target audience know you have the solution they need, and what it's going to take (time, money, creativity) to meet your business goals.

Otherwise, all the development time/expense are in jeopardy. It sounds like you're in a bind now, without a great way to earn a return on your investment.

I have a fair amount of experience selling software, and also some experience implementing outbound marketing campaigns. If you would like to chat by phone (no charge) please click on my username, and send me an e-mail.

As far as advice, it sounds like you have done the development without the research. It's not too late to conduct research on the needs of your target market. I wish I knew more about your situation (and your level of experience, background, target market...) but generally speaking, if I were in your situation, I would begin by interviewing current users of competitive software packages to better understand your place in the market.
