Multiple Brand Marketing

A services company started with one brand. Through expansion it has acquired other brands (7), none of which compete in the same market although all brands offer the same service - Real Estate sales. What are the benefits/pitfalls of rebranding all to one brand or keeping multiple brands? What are the key points to remember in internal and external marketing? Any case studies to support your ideas?
