Free To Paid Messaging Strategy

Posted by ss2480 on 125 Points
I am working on a marketing message for a subscription service that is currently included as part of a package, but due to business pressures, will no longer be subsidized. Customers will need to switch to a new platform to continue getting the subscription. They will get a discount off of the service, as well as discounts off additional, future services should they sign up. Has anyone seen any good examples of companies effectively messaging a free to paid service (but with added benefits)? Or have any advice?

What % of your users are actively using the free subscription service? If it's low, then charging will be a non-issue, no one will care/sign up. If it's high, then you need to make the argument of increased value/benefit. While free forever is nice, if your paid model is a higher benefit to them, make that case. Also, any possibility to allow the free model to continue - but only have access to FAQs/articles/etc, and then have an upsell to those folks that want more?
