Some 40% of small businesses in the United States are using AI tools in 2024, up from 23% in 2023, according to recent research from the US Chamber of Commerce.

The report was based on data from a survey conducted between June 21 and July 16, 2024, among 1,100 people at US small businesses (those with fewer than 250 employees).

Among US small businesses that have adopted AI, the most common uses are for marketing, the development of customer insights, and communicating with customers/prospective customers.

The most commonly used AI-enabled tools among US small businesses are search engines, social media platforms, email services, and financial management software.

Among people at US small businesses who are using AI tools, most (55%) say they have been using them for one year or less.

Some 60% of respondents believe AI will help their business in the future.
