A while back, the American Film Institute released its list of the Top 100 Movie Quotes of all time. And me being me---severely over-caffeinated and somewhat demented yet all the while well-meaning---decided it was time to take some quotes and apply them to the social media-crazy world we find ourselves in.

So here goes! “Fasten your seat belts. It’s going to be a bumpy ride.”

“Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” (Gone With the Wind)
Social Media Translation: My response to anyone who tells me how many Twitter followers they have.

“I’m going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.”  (The Godfather)
Social Media Translation: Another Social Media Snake Oil salesman promising X number of followers in X number of days.

“What we’ve got here is (a) failure to communicate.”  (Cool Hand Luke)
Social Media Translation: I am not receiving your DMs so clearly the world must be ending.

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.” (Love Story)
Social Media Translation: I swear I meant to retweet you, I swear! I love your tweets!

“You can’t handle the truth!” (A Few Good Men)
Social Media Translation: No one really gives a damn what you have to say on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, the bathroom wall, a Post-It note … They don’t care!

“Round up the usual suspects.” (Casablanca)
Social Media Translation: Client’s mandate to set up a Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn account.

“Today, I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth.” (The Pride of the Yankees)
Social Media Translation: You made it to 1,000 Twitter followers

“If you build it, he will come.” (Field of Dreams)
Social Media Translation: OK, I’ve set up a blog, Google+, Twitter & Facebook … Where is everybody?

“Say hello to my little friend!” (Scarface)
Social Media Translation: You excitedly tell someone that your Twitter account only has 5 followers

“I have always depended on the kindness of strangers.” (A Streetcar Named Desire)
Social Media Translation: My Twitter plan is to get complete strangers to retweet all of my tweets.

“I feel the need—the need for speed!” (Top Gun)
Social Media Translation: I am now going to send a message from Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and YouTube ALL at the same time …

OK, that was just a random sampling; there are plenty of other quotes from the AFI list I didn’t include.
