With the 2013 Oscars all but here, audiences have been taking to social media in the past month or two to cast their "votes" for their choices of award winners.
As anticipation mounts for one of the entertainment industry’s most important nights, RadiumOne created an infographic of audiences' social-sharing behavior, in an effort to predict the outcome of the night’s festivities.
It posed the question, If it were up to social media alone, who would be taking home the Oscar?
Highlights from RadiumOne's infographic:
- Best Picture: Silver Lining Playbook
- Best Actor: Hugh Jackman, Les Miserables
- Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, Silver Lining Playbook
Brandwatch, too, has released an infographic of social buzz related to the Oscars, albeit from a different angle. It points out that with big events like the Super Bowl and Olympics, social buzz took off close to the timing of the event, but according to a graph in the infographic, January 8 was the day on which the greatest amount of Oscars-related buzz on social media, with a steady decline leading up to this weekend’s event.
What might this mean for future Oscars-related social media engagement? Brandwatch highlights a couple of lessons for advertisers:
- Marketers can pick up public vibe well ahead of time to prep their Oscar ads and messaging.
- Marketers better have those ads ready the first week of January, not in February.
Movies that weren’t nominated for an Oscar but "won" based on social shares alone are as follows, according to RadiumOne:
- The Dark Knight Rises earned the most shares with 55%, yet came in second for biggest money maker on opening weekend.
- Edward Cullen of the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 would come out on top as Best Actor with 38 million likes on Facebook.
- Katniss Everdeen of the Hunger Games would win for Best Actress with 8.5 million likes on Facebook, followed by Ted with 7.6 million likes.
- Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 would be the winner for Best Picture, with 1,286, 488 million followers (10X more followers than any other motion picture.)
