More than one-third of Americans are concerned that artificial intelligence may cause the end of the human race on Earth, according to recent research from YouGov.

The report was based on data from a survey conducted between November 27 and December 3, 2024, among 1,110 adults in the United States.

Some 36% of respondents say they are very or somewhat concerned about the possibility that AI will cause the end of the human race on earth. That proportion increases to 49% among people who say they know a great deal about AI.

 

Most respondents (72%) say they are not concerned about AI advances' resulting in their losing their jobs or having their hours cut.

Respondents are more likely to say that AI will have a negative impact on society and the US economy than on their own lives.

Some 53% of respondents say they feel cautious about advances in artificial intelligence.
