The use of terminology related to artificial intelligence (such as "AI" and "generative AI") by media outlets has grown tremendously since the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, according to recent research from Everypixel.
The report was based on analysis of 10 years of data from the NOW Corpus, which is a repository of billions of words sourced from online newspapers and magazines.
The researchers found that use of the term "AI" by media outlets grew steadily from 2016 through most of 2022, and then surged in late 2022 and all throughout 2023.
Similarly, the use of the terms "generative AI" and "AI models" by media outlets jumped beginning in late 2022.
ChatGPT's release has also driven much more coverage about the potential pitfalls of AI: Use of the terms "AI safety" and "responsible AI" by media outlets has spiked since 2022.
