Most business leaders who have been through a crisis say they would practice their communications plan more in advance, use more communications tools, and broaden the scope of their communications plan, according to recent research from Capterra.

The report was based on data from a survey conducted in January 2023 among 243 leaders (director level or above) at US businesses.

Some 84% of business leaders who have been through a crisis say they would increase practicing their firm's crisis communications plan in advance, 78% say they’d increase the tools used for communication, and 72% say they’d increase the scope of the plan.

What business leaders would change after experiencing a crisis

Only 49% of respondents say their firm has a formal, documented crisis communications plan.

The teams included most often in crisis communications plans are IT, business operations, and public relations.

Departments included most often in crisis communication plans

Among respondents whose firms have experienced a crisis, the most common events have been cyberattacks (28% have experienced).
