YouTube is the social platform visited most by teenagers in the United States and it is also the platform teenagers are most likely to say they use almost constantly, according to recent research from the Pew Research Center.

The report was based on data from a survey conducted in April and May, 2022, among 1,316 people in the US ages 13 to 17.

Some 95% of US teens say they use YouTube and 19% say they use it almost constantly. TikTok is the second-most popular platform: 67% of US teens say they use it, and 16% say they use it almost constantly.

How often teens say they use YouTube

The share of teens who say they use Facebook has dropped dramatically since Pew conducted a similar survey in 2014-15, going from 71% then to 32% in 2022.

The use of social platforms by teens varies by gender, race and ethnicity, and family income.

For example, teen girls are more likely to use TikTok compared with teen boys, and Black teens are more likely to use TikTok compared with White and Hispanic teens. Teens from more affluent households are less likely to use Facebook compared with other teens.

What social media teens are likely to use based on demographic

More than half (55%) of US teens believe they spend about the right amount of time on social media and 36% believe they spend too much time on social media.

Some 54% of teens say it would be at least somewhat hard to give up social media and 46% say it would be at least somewhat easy.
