Google Android and Apple continued to expand their share of the US smartphone market during the three months ended July 2012: Apple captured 33.4%, up 2.0 points from the previous three-month period, while Android reached 52.2%, up 1.4 points, according to data from the comScore MobiLens service.

Texting remained the most popular mobile content activity, with 75.6% of US mobile subscribers sending a text message to another phone as of July.

Despite a small slip, Samsung maintained its lead in the mobile OEM market with 25.6% of US mobile subscribers.

Smartphone Platform Market Share

More than 114 million people in the US owned smartphones during the three-month period ended July, up 7% from the period ended April.

Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 52.2% of market share, followed by Apple with 33.4%.

RIM ranked third with 9.5% share, followed by Microsoft (3.6%) and Symbian (0.8%).

Mobile Content Use

As of July, 75.6% of US mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, up 1.5 percentage points from the previous three-month period.

Downloaded applications were used by 52.6% of subscribers (up 2.4 points), while browsers were used by 51.2% (up 2.2 points).

Accessing of social networking sites or blogs increased 1.9 points to 37.9% of mobile subscribers.

Game-playing was done by 33.8% of the mobile audience, while 28.3% listened to music on their phones.

OEM Market Share

Some 234 million Americans age 13+ used mobile devices during the three-month period ended July.

Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.6% of US mobile subscribers, followed by LG with 18.4%.

Apple continued to gain share in the OEM market, ranking third with 16.3% of mobile subscribers (up 1.9 points), followed by Motorola with 11.2 percent and HTC with 6.4% (up 0.4 points).
