Google Android widened its lead in the US smartphone market in June 2011, accounting for 40.1% of smartphone subscribers, up 5.4 percentage points (PPs) from the previous three-month period, according to data from the comScore MobiLens service.
Apple strengthened its No. 2 position with 26.6% of the smartphone market as of June, up 1.1 PPs from the three-month period ended March. RIM ranked third with 23.4% of market share, followed by Microsoft (5.8%) and Symbian (2.0%).
Some 78.5 million people in the US owned a smartphone as of June, up 8% from the preceding three-month period.
OEM Market: Samsung Still Rules
Device manufacturer Samsung was the top OEM with 25.3% of US mobile subscribers as of June, up 0.8 PPs from the three-month period ended March. LG was second with 21.3% (up 0.4 PPs), followed by Motorola (14.5%) and Apple with 8.9% (up 1.0 PPs). RIM rounded out the top five with 7.9% of marketing share.
Both Motorola and RIM lost OEM market share as of March, down 1.3 and 0.5 PPs, respectively.
Overall, some 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices as of June.

Mobile Content Use Patterns
More people used their smartphone to access a Web browser or social site as of June:
- 29.1% of the mobile audience accessed social media sites or blogs as of June, up 1.8 PPs from the previous three-month period.
- 40.1% of subscribers used accessed a browser, up 1.5 PPs from the previous three-month period.
Meanwhile, nearly seven in ten (69.6%) mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device as of June, up 1.0 PP from the previous three-month period.
Downloaded apps were used by 39.5% of the mobile audience, up 2.2 PPs from the three-month period ended March, while 26.9% played games and 19.0% listened to music via smartphone.
