Nearly three-quarters (73%) of mobile content downloaders—i.e., those who download mobile entertainment content from the Myxer platform—say they listen to music on their mobile phones, according to Myxer.
Among such mobile music consumers, 55% say they listen via MP3, 12% listen via streaming audio, and 6% listen via mobile applications.
But traditional media outlets also rank high among Myxer users. Packaged CDs, live events, radio, and TV remain popular ways to access new music and artists.

Mobile and Web-based Music
Among those who listen to music via mobile, most (32%) say they listen 1-5 hours a week on their phones, 26% listen 20+ hours a week, 15% listen 6-10 hours, and 10% listen 11-20 hours.
As for how Myxer users get most of their music, 42% cite iTunes, 18% get music from friends, and 9% buy it at Wal-Mart.

The Apple iPod and computer are the most popular devices for listening: 29% of Myxer users say they listen most using their iPod and 27% listen most using their computer.
The car is still popular for listening: 24% of Myxer users listen to music mostly from their car stereo.
The Web is the most popular source of general entertainment: 49% of Myxer users say they consume most of their entertainment on the Internet, followed by those who cite TV (18%), radio (16%), the phone (10%), and other sources (7%).
Traditional Media Outlets
Nearly one-half of surveyed Myxer users (47%) say they discover music via traditional radio. iTunes (15%) has now surpassed TV (12%) for music discovery, followed by social media sites MySpace (7%) and Facebook and Twitter (11%, combined).
CDs are still popular among Myxer users: 74% say they buy physical CDs; 40% have purchased 1-5 CDs in the past year, 20% have purchased 6-10 CDs, and 18% have purchased 11+ CDs.
In addition, some 65% of Myxer users attended at least one live music event in the previous 12 months—and 55% of those concertgoers bought something from the artist at the venue.
About the data: Findings are from a survey conducted in May 2010 among 1,049 users who came to Myxer's site to download mobile content (mobile entertainment downloads consisting of ringtones, wallpapers, videos, applications, and games). Among respondents, 20% were age 13-17; 21%, age 18-24; 23%, age 25-34; 32%, age 35-54; and 4%, age 55+.
