Over one-third (36%) of smartphone owners say they want to receive mobile grocery coupons, but only 9% have received a location-based coupon, discount code, or text message on their phone in the previous six months, according to a survey from Compete.
Another 29% of smartphone owners say they want cell phone applications that can enable scanning of product barcodes for offers or discounts, and 26% want offers that can be saved and pursued at their leisure.
Meanwhile, 21% of smartphone owners say they are interested in location-based retail promotions via SMS (short message service) text, and 15% say they are open to all ads via SMS.
Still, some smartphone owners are wary of mobile offers: 41% say they want to be able to access coupons on demand—or for their phones to store coupons until a more convenient time, Compete finds.
Overall, 74% of smartphone owners say they use their device primarily for personal reasons.
Throughout a typical day, use is spread fairly evenly: 76% of smartphone owners say they use their devices while at home, including 26% who do so for 1-3 hours daily, while 74% use their device during miscellaneous downtime, including 24% who do so for 1-3 hours daily.
Meanwhile, 66% of smartphone users use their device while shopping, including 16% who do so for over one hour a day.
About the data: The findings are from a survey of 1,246 smartphone owners polled from January to February 2010 by Compete.
