January marked the start of the tax season, prompting millions of consumers to visit tax websites during the month as they prepared to file their returns, according to comScore.
Online traffic to travel sites registered double-digit growth during the month as Americans sought off-season deals and planned ahead for spring travel. Meanwhile, continued challenges in the job market prompted many Americans to seek online employment opportunities and career advice.
- Business/Finance-Taxes websites attracted 28.8 million visitors in January, up 351% from the previous month.
- Travel- Ground/Cruise websites attracted 14 million visitors during the month, up 30% from December. VacationsToGo.com Sites ranked No. 1 in the category with 2.5 million visitors in January, up 62% from the previous month. Amtrak.com attracted more than 2.3 million visitors (up 13%), followed by Carnival Cruise Lines with 2.2 million visitors (up 79%), and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd with 1.5 million visitors (up 54%).
- Other top-gaining Travel sub-categories included Transactions, Hotels/Resorts, and Online Travel Agents––each registering significant traffic increases during the month.
- Career Resources websites attracted 51.1 million visitors in January, an all-time high, and up 20% from the previous month. Monster Worldwide led the category with 19.3 million visitors during the month, up 17% from December, followed by Yahoo HotJobs with 19.0 million visitors (up 72%), and Career Builder LLC with 18.3 million (up 10%).
