Though the US accounts for 50.1% of all Twitter users––down from 62.1% in June 2009––Twitter use elsewhere, particularly Brazil, Germany, and Indonesia, is quickly growing, according to a study by Sysomos.

Brazil accounts for 8.8% of Twitter users, up from 2% in June 2009. Germany's Twitter users account for 2.5%, up from 1.5%, and Indonesia––which accounted for only 0.5% of users just six months ago––climbed to 2.5%.

Americans Most Active Tweeters

Americans still lead other countries in terms of tweet activity: 56.6% of all tweets come from the US, down from 50.9 in June, followed by the UK (8.1%) and Brazil (6.7%).

Similarly, although New York ranks fourth in terms of Twitter users (1.44%), the city leads in the number of tweets contributed (2.37%).

London ranks second (2.12% of tweets contributed), followed by Los Angeles (2.1%).

Little Use for Geolocation

Users are uninterested in tagging tweets to their location, Sysomos found.

Almost no one is using the geolocation application programming interface (API) that Twitter rolled out last year: 0.23% of all Tweets are tagged with geolocation.

About the data: Sysomos analyzed data from over 13 million unique Twitter users who were active between Oct. 16, 2009 and Dec. 16, 2009.
