Tough Job Objection

Posted by Anonymous on 500 Points
Overcoming a tough job history objection.

As you can see from my resume below, I have been out of marketing for 7 years. I know with my recent position(s), I’ve used marketing in other ways just not to the level as before. Marketing is my passion and it is what I do best. How do I overcome this time span when asked this question? Why have you not been in marketing for 7 years. Is there a good answer? I am stumped. Please help. Thanks, David Boyle

Depends on what you've been doing for 7 years. If you've been working in another department it means you're able to relate better to those departments.

The basics of marketing don't change. As long as you've stayed current on trends you shouldn't have a problem

I agree with both the above.

Now if you had been in jail for seven years for fraud, theft, murder or arson, I'd be the first to admit, that would represent a totally different kind of personal marketing challenge.

If you've been honest above, I think your resume indicates you've widened your experience in the IT and Financial areas, which, from my perspective at least, enhances your appeal as a marketer, rather than diminishing it.

Any prospective employer who doesn't get that, doesn't deserve you working for them. Period. Move on to the next opportunity.

So treat the stint outside marketing as an asset, not a liability. Work out how to articulate how it's improved your strengths and removed some weaknesses, and soon you'll realise it's an advantage, not a disadvantage.

Employers want enthusiastic people with fresh perspectives and new ideas, not stale people who've been in the same rut for years.

Best of luck with your search.
