We use the Gregorian calendar, based on the Roman calendar that focused on lunar cycles. In the Roman calendar, only 10 of the 12 months were named. Winter was thought of as an unorganized "dead" period, so January and February were nameless and the year started in March. Harsh, but also... I get it.
