Beginning Link Building On A New(er) Website

Posted by aresnik7 on 250 Points
I just got hired on for a website and I am looking for a little bit of help on how to get started building links for it.
This is a golf merchandise website and we are looking to boost our page rank organically and not hire a firm to do the link building for us. I have done research on how to build relationships through link building, but my main question is should I link up with my competitors who have a higher page rank? Should I only focus on golf related websites to link with? Also, does any one have any best practices on how to link build? Thanks everyone!

My suggestion: Make the content on your site so fantastic that bloggers and webmasters (at other sites) will WANT to link to you.

(I know that's the old-fashioned way, but it works! And the links will come from the most relevant sites that way.)

    Thanks for your response.
With this being a 100% product driven site, it is hard for us to get good content. We are currently working on blogs and reviews, any other ideas?

Why would other sites want to link to yours? What's in it for them? And what is an inbound link worth to you? (Have you monetized it?)

If the site is 100% product driven and you can't change that, then maybe the real question is whether link-building should be a priority. Why not spend your time/effort/money on increasing traffic to the site, or improving conversion, or increasing average order size, or increasing loyalty/frequency of purchase, etc.

It seems to me that for a product driven site, link building is going to require an inordinate amount of time/effort/money with a low probability of major success.

Just my $0.02 worth. Others may disagree.

It's a great point and my boss and I have been talking extensively about it.
We feel that link building could increase our traffic organically via page ranks.
I know it will take a long time to see some ROI in it, but if it increases our traffic then it will be worth the investment.
I really like your first comment about great content and that could be a direction that we go with the blogging and product reviews.
Thanks for your responses, they are really making me think.

I would just find out how my competitors are ranking. Look at the top 10 results and see what are the factors got them there. List all the factors and go through one by one.

    1. Do reverse engineering on their websites.
    - if its great content than you do the same and if not, you create it knowing you will have a better factor.
    - is their websites structured properly?
    - are their pages link internally?
    - on pageseo ?

    2. reverse engineer their backlinks :
    - proper anchor text links?
    - are they buying those links?
    - are other websites naturally linking to them?
    - are they on local directories?
    - are they on google place?
    - are they bookmarking?
    - are they using social sites?

Try using free software to judge. Once you know you can achieve the same results than invest into right software to do it for you. If you feel the keyword is too competitive than go for the next one.

    Hope that helps. Good luck.
